The One Who Rescues You

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Imagine looking at a swimming pool filled with people. All of a sudden, you see a small child caught out in the deep end, completely unable to swim and sinking to the bottom. So you start waving your arms and shouting at him, trying to give him some tips on how to make it back to the shallow end of the pool.

Does that make sense? Would anyone in their right mind just stand there and shout while a child is drowning? Absolutely not! Every single rational-thinking person would jump in the water and pull that child to safety.

Left in our sin, we’re exactly like that drowning child. We have no hope of escaping death on our own. And while the world’s religions wave their arms and shout instructions at us for pulling ourselves from death, Jesus is the only one who gets in the water to save us.

Only A Few Miracles

And so he did only a few miracles there because of their unbelief. (NLT) ( Matthew 13:58 )

Don’t wait for miracles to happen to jump start your faith. It starts with just the slightest itch for a greater purpose in life. Don’t let the Creator of your life pass by because of your unbelief. Have a hard time believing, but want to believe? It’s okay. Make a step in the right direction – listen to a Christian radio station, check out a sermon online, read an inspiring faith based book.

Unwilling To Work

Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat.” ( 2 Thessalonians 3:10 )

With so much going on in our lives today, the “unwillingness to work” doesn’t appear applicable. If anything, we work way too much. However, being busy versus working on God’s plan for you are two very different things. Are you willing to work on God’s plan for you? There’s more to His plan than just paying the bills. If you strive to work hard using the special talents He gave you, your work will be more effortless and purposeful.

I Could Boast

If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.( 1 Corinthians 13:3 )

Sometimes on paper we can do all of the right things and appear to be righteous. However, this verse talks about taking the correct actions and still be incorrect because your heart is in the wrong place. The golden rule of loving others is key. Take a minute to thoroughly examine your motives. Are you motivated out of love or self-gain?

Remain In Me

Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. (NLT) ( John 15:4 )

In this passage Jesus is represented by the vine. He says, if you stay close to Him you will receive His nourishment to allow you to produce fruit. How can you remain in Him? Gather some friends on a regular basis and talk about your spiritual walk. Mentor some youth so when they come to you with questions, you rely on the Bible. Seek out and serve in your local food pantry. Above all, be spiritually fruitful!

Ingratitude With Honesty

“Jesus asked, ‘were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?” (Luke 17:17)

In this story in Luke, ten lepers approach Jesus. They are considered “unclean”. Jesus sends them to a priest, and on the way their disease is healed. No more disfigurement. No more pain. They can return to their jobs and families. Imagine their joy as they danced into the temple, showing the priest their restored fingers and skin as new as a babe. But only one returns to thank Jesus. Only one. There is no doubt the other nine are just as excited, but only one is grateful enough to return and thank Jesus. Nine people are healed on the exterior, but there’s some inner work that still needs to be done.
Sometimes our greatest heart work takes place when we acknowledge where we are the least thankful.

Maybe this Thanksgiving your house will be full. There’ll be dirty dishes. Lots of them. Maybe your dad will tell that same old joke — the corny one that isn’t that funny, but he can’t help but tell it. It’s easy to get distracted by the noise or the mess, but I can’t help but wonder, What if we stepped into our ingratitude with honesty?

Dear Lord, today I saw the mess and heard the noise but failed to be grateful for the people around the table. Let me pause for a moment and point out all the reasons I’m thankful.

Lost Its Flavor

“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.”  (Matthew 5:13)

Salt is used as a preservative to keep food fresh longer. Once it loses its usefulness the salt will get tossed out with yesterday’s trash. It’s difficult to imagine how salt loses its saltiness but in the context of a Christian, it’s easy to see how a Christian loses their flavor. When Christians try to blend in with the world we give away the essence of a Christian. Let’s do our best to keep our flavor!

Impossibilities

Believe ye that I am able to do this? (Matt. 9:28).

God deals with impossibilities. It is never too late for Him to do so, when the impossible is brought to Him, in full faith, by the one in whose life and circumstances the impossible must be accomplished if God is to be glorified. If in our own life there have been rebellion, unbelief, sin, and disaster, it is never too late for God to deal triumphantly with these tragic facts if brought to Him in full surrender and trust.

Beyond Your Imagination

The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. (Deuteronomy 31:8)

The ups and downs in life bring beauty in unforeseen ways. There are life events that batter us down. However, your faith can determine the outcome. It’s easy to stay beaten in a lonely place by focusing on yourself as a victim. Or, you can overcome this and recover by placing your faith in God. Even more, you can come out a better person and excel beyond your imagination. Remember, God has the power to make things we can’t see appear. It just takes a little faith.

Enter with Thanksgiving

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. (Psalms 100:4-5)

Worship is always about entering – entering into grace, entering with thanksgiving, entering to share with others, but most of all entering into the Lord’s presence in a special way. But our entering is not the basis of worship. Instead, worship is about the Lord’s faithfulness, goodness, and enduring grace. We come to God like so many before us, who are waiting with God for us. We come to praise him for all he has been, all he is, and all he will be. We come to enter and worship
