Meeting God Early

David in Psalm 5, in his approach unto God, is deliberate with his words, and the meditation of his heart. He is about to exercise his heart in prayer and his plea is that God would hear, or as he says, “Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation.” We see that David is confident that God hears him, and he asks and I use his words, “Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray.” David is not coming to God without entering into His presence with expectation, and in his soul, he makes his cry unto His Lord with an expectation that God will meet him in his prayer closet as he makes known his requests. Listen to his confidence: “My voice shall thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto you and look up.” Why? “For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.”

Do we quiet our heart before Him as we make our requests known and are we in faith when we pray, knowing God hears our voice? Charles Spurgeon said concerning this Psalm: “While the dew is on the grass, let grace drop upon the soul.” He also said: “Prayer should be the key of the day and the lock of the night.” I sit here this morning, exercised in my moments with God, that this is the difficult thing for most believers today. David said unto God in the latter part of verse 3, “In the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.” My own thought this morning is there is confidence in David’s heart that God will hear Him. We too should let the meditation of our heart, produce the words of our mouth, and lift our voice up unto Him. As I read this morning, I love David’s heart. He is confident, and we see he understands that God has no pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee. He says in His prayer: “The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.” David was a sinner like we are. But His heart is in the right place. “But as for me, (verse 7) I will come into thy house in the multitude of they mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.” In Hebrews 8:12 we read these powerful words, and I hold on to them in my mediation this morning. “For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more,” I pause and thank God for his tender mercies in my life today and everyday.

Listen this morning and learn: “Lead me, O Lord, in the righteousness because of mine enemies: make thy way straight before my face. For there is no faithfulness in their mouth: their inward part is very wickedness: their throat is an open sepulcher: they flatter with their tongue.” I close with verse 11 this morning: “But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them every shout for joy, because thou defends them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. For thou Lord, will bless the righteous: with favor wilt thou compass him as with a shield.” In simplicity, the man or woman of God can start their day with joy in the morning, leaving their burdens with the Lord, crying out in His name and rejoicing knowing that God hears our voice and meets us each day. Are we there yet? Come before Him with thanksgiving, knowing it is God who is able to make your life abound in His goodness.
